How to Change Filters on Reverse Osmosis Systems

How to Change Filters on Reverse Osmosis Systems

Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems are an excellent way to provide clean, great-tasting water for your home. These systems remove impurities such as sediment, chlorine, heavy metals, and other harmful contaminants. However, to keep your RO system performing optimally, it is essential to replace the filters on a regular basis. Regularly changing the filters helps keep your system running smoothly and ensures your drinking water stays clean and safe. As time passes, filters in a reverse osmosis system collect dirt and other particles, which can lower water quality and put a strain on the system. That’s why it’s important to change filters on reverse osmosis systems regularly, skipping replacements can lead to damage to the RO membrane or other essential components.

Why It’s Important to Change Reverse Osmosis Filters

Changing your filters is about more than just maintaining water quality—it’s also about protecting your health and your home’s plumbing system.

Benefits of timely filter replacement:

  • Ensures consistently pure, safe water
  • Maintains proper flow and water pressure
  • Prevents bacteria buildup and contamination
  • Extends the life of the RO membrane
  • Keeps your system operating efficiently

Understanding the Role of RO Filters

  • A typical reverse osmosis (RO) system goes through about three to five stages, with each stage using a specific type of filter. The most common ones you’ll find are the sediment filter, carbon pre-filter, reverse osmosis (RO) membrane, and post-carbon filter. Each filter has a vital job in making sure the water gets thoroughly purified.
  • The sediment filter removes dirt, sand, and rust particles from your water. The carbon pre-filter eliminates chlorine and protects the RO membrane from chemical damage. The RO membrane filters out contaminants such as lead, fluoride, and bacteria, while the post-carbon filter improves taste and odor.
  • Knowing when to replace each filter is crucial. Sediment and carbon pre-filters usually need to be changed every 6 to 12 months. Replace the RO membrane every 2 to 3 years and change the post-carbon filter annually.

Step-by-Step: How to Change RO Filters

1. Shut Off the Water SupplyChanging Reverse Osmosis Filters

Turn off the cold water valve feeding the RO system. Then, close the storage tank valve to stop the water flow completely.

2. Release Pressure

Open the RO faucet to release any built-up pressure. Allow the water to drain fully from the system.

3. Remove Filter Housings

Use the filter wrench to unscrew each housing carefully. Keep a towel or bucket nearby, as water may spill out.

4. Discard Old Filters

Take out the used filters from each housing. Inspect them for any signs of mold, discoloration, or damage.

5. Clean Filter Housings

Wash the empty housings using mild dish soap and warm water. Rinse them thoroughly to remove any residue.

6. Insert New Filters

Please insert the new filters into their housings in the proper sequence: start with the sediment filter, followed by the carbon filter(s), then the RO membrane at the top, and finally, the post-carbon filter. Make sure each one is aligned correctly and securely in place.

7. Reassemble and Tighten

Screw the housings back into place by hand. Use the wrench to tighten gently—just enough to secure them without overtightening.

8. Turn the Water Back On

Slowly reopen the cold water supply valve. Check all connections and housings for any leaks.

9. Flush the System

Allow the system to fill, and then open the RO faucet. Run the water for 10–15 minutes to flush out air and any loose carbon particles from the new filters.

When to Call a Professional

Changing filters is something many homeowners can handle on their own, but there are times when it’s best to call in a professional. Suppose you’re unsure how to access the membrane, struggle with opening the filter housings, or continue to experience issues with your system. In that case, it’s a good idea to contact a technician for assistance. An expert can ensure proper installation and prevent costly mistakes.
